Are Auto Insurance Agents Obsolete?

Hardly. In the state of California any transaction involving insurance has to be purchased through a licensed agent. Although getting an auto quote online has grown in popularity, when it comes time to purchase the policy, the consumer still must talk to an agent. Auto insurance agents can help you save a lot of money, but if you're getting a quote from just one company, you're limiting your options.

An independent agent, who represents multiple carriers, knows each carriers available programs, and the discounts that they offer. This is important because not all carriers are the same. They each offer different coverages for different risks. The agent will ask you questions to determine what coverage will be best for you, finds discounts to apply, and then shops to find the company and price that best fits your needs. It is done in an instant quote that is usually faster than going online yourself and doing it solo.

What I've found interesting is that when I talk to potential customers who have gone online and gotten auto quotes, is that they usually don't understand the different coverages. In the end, they wind up at the mercy of the insurance company.

A knowledgeable independent agent can explain the different coverages and apply discounts to save you a ton of money. Just make sure you talk to a reputable agent. Ask friends for a referral to a good agent they might know. Some agents charge a fee, and some don't.

Motorcycle Insurance Discounts

Looking to lower your insurance rate? Follow a few of the tips below and you could save a bundle on your motorcycle insurance.

Each motorcycle insurance provider maintains different policies regarding rate discounts. To find these discounts you'll need to do some research, inquiring with individual insurance carriers about possible discounts and lower-rate incentives. Here are some ways to save now on your rate:

  • You're a homeowner.
  • You're married.
  • You have had no at-fault accidents during your previous policy period, or at-fault accidents in the last three years.
  • You complete an approved motorcycle safety course.
  • Your motorcycle is equipped with LoJack, an anti-theft tracking system.
  • You have a clean driving record, with no accidents or violations within three years.
  • You pay your policy bill in full rather than in monthly payments.
  • You have a history of paying your bills on time. Some carriers will run a credit report on you.
  • Bundle your policies, making you eligible for a multiple policy discount. This would entail, for example, combining your motorcycle with condo, homeowners, auto, or another motorcycle.
  • You switch to another insurance company. Some providers offer transfer discounts.
  • You're a member of one of the following motorcycle organizations: American Motorcycle Association, BMW Motorcycle Owners of America, Gold Wing Road Riders Association, Gold Wing Touring Association, Harley Owners Group, Honda Riders Club of America, Motorcycle Safety Foundation, or Motorcycle Touring Association.
  • You annually ride a limited number of miles.
  • You ride a certain type of bike. Cruisers, for example, have lower rates than sport motorcycles.
  • Work with an independent agent. Independent agents know their product and work with multiple carriers, to find you the coverage you need, at a price you can afford.
